With Apologies to Sappho

With Apologies to Sappho

Phainetai moi
And him, with his godlike ease,
sitting beside her, laughing,
hearing her voice and see-
ing
her smile
While I stand here dumbly,
forgetting my practiced words
and feeling the world recede
and
grow dim.

Deduke men a selanna
The stars sweep west
the moon is down;
night creeps past.
I lie alone.
